Beyond & Within: No Laughing Matter | Anthology Announcement & Contents List

Posted by Leah Ratcliffe
We’re delighted to present the contents list for our upcoming Beyond & Within anthology: No Laughing Matter, publishing in October 2026 and edited by Peter Coleborn & Mike Chinn. Dark fantasy and horror aren’t just about gore – they often sit right on the edge of humour, where fear and laughter blur together. From jump scares that trigger nervous laughs to unsettling comedy, the two are tightly intertwined. This anthology leans into that mix, using dark humour, satire, and the absurd to explore how we cope with the unknown by laughing at it. Five of the stories in the exciting line-up were selected from a popular open submissions round held last year, with the rest sourced from well-known authors in the horror genre.

The Flame Tree Beyond and Within short story collections bring together tales of myth and imagination by modern and contemporary writers, carefully selected by anthologists, and sometimes featuring short stories from a single author. Overall, the series presents a wide range of diverse and inclusive voices with myth, folkloric-inflected short fiction, and an emphasis on the supernatural, science fiction, the mysterious and the speculative. The books themselves are gorgeous, with foiled covers, printed edges and published only in hardcover editions, offering a lifetime of reading pleasure.

A note from Peter Coleborn & Mike Chinn:

Humour and horror seem to be bedfellows, if not opposite sides of the same coin. One goes with the other. We guffaw at the person who slips on a banana skin, only to feel guilt at the victim’s painful landing. Or we hear bad news and feel terrible about it; yet afterwards, if all resolves satisfactorily, we smile in relief. In this book you’ll read stories where the laugh may come first, or at the end.
