Beyond & Within: Folk Horror | Anthology Announcement & Contents List

Posted by Leah Ratcliffe
We’re delighted to present the  contents list for our upcoming Beyond & Within anthology: Folk Horror. Edited by Paul Kane and Marie O’Regan, this new collection of stories covers a wide range of mythologies and dark corners from around the world, revealing tales from the shadows of isolation, creepy forests and horrors rising from the land itself. Award-winning anthologists Paul Kane and Marie O'Regan have commissioned an outstanding selection of stories with contributions from authors including Neil Gaiman, John Connolly, Adam L.G. Nevill, Alison Littlewood and Jen Williams. 5 stories were also selected from an open submissions round held last year, which attracted hundreds of submissions.

The Flame Tree Beyond and Within short story collections bring together tales of myth and imagination by modern and contemporary writers, carefully selected by anthologists, and sometimes featuring short stories from a single author. Overall, the series presents a wide range of diverse and inclusive voices with myth, folkloric-inflected short fiction, and an emphasis on the supernatural, science fiction, the mysterious and the speculative. The books themselves are gorgeous, with foiled covers, printed edges and published only in hardcover editions, offering a lifetime of reading pleasure.

The programme will include the chosen stories and the author’s bio, where it is read by hundreds of writers in the UK Fantasy Community. It’s a fantastic, paid opportunity for authors! Please note that the monthly newsletter will run as usual.

The theme is…

Mythos Machine

We're looking for stories that explore the gods, the machines and their relationship with each other, and with humankind. Are we hovering at the edge of the Machine Age? What happens when AI moves beyond interpreting the myths of the ancient, and human, and begins to create its own? Are we living in a Phillip K. Dick movie? Do machines dream of other machines, or explore at the edges of their own knowledge, just as humans have done. Is the human imagination now irrelevant? Are the stories of the gods merely ignorant tales of the ill-educated, or subtle prophecies of hidden truths consumed now by the very machines we created? And can those machines truly reflect the depths of ancient origins? Do the elder gods just laugh at our petty concerns? So many tales to explore

We’re pleased to announce the authors included in our upcoming anthology: Immigrant Sci-Fi Short Stories! Earlier this year, we opened for submissions from writers with a variety of personal connections to the experience of immigration, migration and relocation, in order to give voice to those telling stories from the perspective of the incoming. The book, due to be published in mid-March (UK) and late April 2023 (North America), combines new submissions, complemented by selected contemporary and modern stories, set in future, interstellar, fantastical and alternative realities, with a foundation of older, realist narratives exploring the plights and adventures of immigrants. Award-winning author of Alien StoriesE.C. Osonduprovides the foreword, alongside an insightful introduction by Betsy Huang, Ph.D., and with guidance from author and educator Sarah Raphael García, this is an intriguing view of the conflict and anxiety between the settled and the unsettled.
