Out now, Detective Mysteries is the latest book in our series of Gothic Fantasy short story anthologies. Released alongside Epic Fantasy Short Stories, the collection similarly features a mix of tales by modern writers alongside much older works from the genre’s early days. In celebration of the book’s publication, we asked the contemporary authors featured in Detective Mysteries to tell us a bit more about their story in the book…

Our new anthology, Epic Fantasy Short Stories, is due out in this week! Paired with Detective Mysteries, the two collections gather together the work of modern authors with classic fiction from the genres. Epic Fantasy promises to be a bewitching mix of adventure, fearsome beasts, and enchantment, and you can read more about the featured tales in Part 1 of this Author Q&A. Now, the book's contemporary authors tell us a bit more about their favourite fantasy stories, as well as the different ways they bring their own stories to life:

We’re very pleased to announce the author lists for our upcoming short story collections Detective Mysteries and Epic Fantasy, due for publication in November 2019. As the latest in our flourishing series of Gothic Fantasy anthologies, the new books continue to pair contemporary takes on the themes with classic tales that have helped shape the genres as we know them today. We received a great response to our recent call for submissions, and we’re delighted to now share the results of a selection process that has been both tough and rewarding: congratulations to the below and many thanks to all who submitted!

Urban Crime, our latest short story anthology combining new and classic fiction on the theme, is available to buy now worldwide! Last week, authors from the book took time to tell us about the inspiration behind their story in the collection (see Part 1 of the Q&A here). Now, they reveal which tales from the genre have influenced them the most, and shed light on their own approaches to putting story ideas down.

Our latest short story anthology, Urban Crime, packs shady characters with thrilling storytelling. In keeping with the rest of the series, the collections combine themed short stories by contemporary writers with older texts that have helped shape the genres as we know them today. As a way to introduce the fascinating mix of stories at work in American Gothic, we asked the modern authors to reveal how the germ of their story ideas took root...

We are now open for submissions for two exciting new anthologies: Detective Mysteries and Epic Fantasy. Due to be published in September 2019, these add to our Gothic Fantasy series, which includes existing titles like Supernatural Horror, Robots & Artificial Intelligence, Dystopia Utopia, American Gothic and more. Again, we are looking for around twenty to thirty short stories by contemporary writers to complement a selection of classic tales in these anthologies. We are keen to encourage new writers, without prejudice to age, background or previous publication history. It’s the story that matters, and the quality of writing.

Our new Cosy Crime Short Stories anthology is now available to buy from our website and includes work by both contemporary authors and classic authors from the genre, including G.K. Chesterton and Arthur Conan Doyle. In the first part of this Q&A with some of its authors, we discovered some of the ideas that led to the stories featured in the book. For this next instalment of the Q&A, the authors speak more about their writing and also provide a few more names for your reading list in telling us which other stories from the genre they’ve enjoyed!
