**The much-loved world of Moominvalley and its rich set of characters** have captured the imagination and hearts of generations of children and adults alike. Our previous blogposts have covered the [development of the comic strip](https://blog.flametreepublishing.com/art-of-fine-gifts/bid/74547/The-Art-of-Fine-Gifts-Tove-Jansson-The-Moomins) by the **endlessly creative Tove Jannson**, and also celebrated the [release](https://blog.flametreepublishing.com/art-of-fine-gifts/bid/76660/Art-Calendars-Books-And-The-Big-Screen-A-Moomin-Adventure) and initial [reviews](https://blog.flametreepublishing.com/art-of-fine-gifts/bid/78079/Moomins-on-the-Riviera-Elegant-Witty-Flawlessly-Faithful) of the feature film *Moomins on the Riviera*. In this post we’re going to explore a little of what makes Jansson’s **quirky** illustrated characters so **universally charming**, and see how these unique drawings are **still able to communicate** with their audience today.

***'They are the Moomins… They are the Moomins…'*** For many others like me, "The Moomins" is a nostalgia loaded term that shoots me straight back to my childhood when I watched the **popular anime** TV series. That charming, yet also strangely melancholy theme song is just one of the many distinctive aspects of the fiercely **unique comic creation**. *[Watch the intro to the TV show here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiZ0eBFTH6k)*.

With the long-anticipated Moomin movie, ***Moomins on the Riviera***, coming to cinemas in October 2014 and our [beautiful 2015 Moomin Calendar](http://www.amazon.co.uk/Moomin-calendar-Calendar-Flame-Publishing/dp/1783610611/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409839579&sr=8-1&keywords=moomin+2015+calendar) now available in our Art of Fine Gifts range, it's not hard to rediscover a childish love for Moomintroll, his family and friends. The loveable trolls are only gaining in popularity since their beginnings as a comic strip in 1945.

A whole world of merchandise and media, from **art calendars** to **coffee cups and T-shirts** to an actual **theme park** ('Moomin World' in Western Finland), has built up around **children's favourites The Moomins** – our hippopotamus-like friends really are a treasure trove for the art of fine gifts. I remember watching these eclectic characters and their adventures in Moominvalley in a **cartoon series back in the 1990s**. But of course they go further back than this, back to **Tove Jansson's original novels**, the first of which was published in 1945 in Swedish by Schildts publishers.
